Le Train Bleu

Autumn Winter ´07 is our second collection where we explore projecting artistic ideas from ballet into our work. This time our collection is based on the ballet “Le Train Bleu” by Diaghilev: it is the story of the Blue Train that connected Paris to the coast of South France, carrying the wealthy and the famous to show off at the promenade; the beach atmosphere of the 1920s is invoked by the washed-out cotton and canvas. “Ballets Russes” first performed the ballet in 1924.

We draw the palette from the set curtains painted by Picasso. Playing on the artist and his image we also rework Picasso’s famous striped jumper into the collection. The art reference is further reflected in printed cotton made to resemble frames of marquetry and gilded wood, tailored into the collars. “Le Train Bleu” is an operetta dansé of a chic and flippant society. Jean Cocteau, who wrote the scenario, mockingly celebrates the cult of open-air life, fine bodies and sport. Like the dances, our garments are inspired by golf, tennis, swimming and acrobatics.
